What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned entry date.
  • Completed online e-Visa application at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn, Vietnam's official e-Visa portal.
  • Digital passport-style photo and a scan of your passport bio page uploaded with the application.
  • A specified port of entry (airport, land, or sea) selected during application.
  • Return or onward ticket and proof of accommodation (not always checked but good to carry).
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay.
  • No in-person biometrics for the e-Visa itself; standard passport check on arrival.

Visa types

  • Single-entry e-Visa: up to 90 days, single entry, fee around USD 25.
  • Multiple-entry e-Visa: up to 90 days validity, unlimited entries within that period, fee around USD 50.
  • Business e-Visa: same 90-day terms as above, used for short business trips; longer work assignments need a separate work permit and visa sponsored by a Vietnamese employer.
  • Visa exemption does not apply to US citizens — the e-Visa (or a traditional sticker visa via embassy) is required for all visit types.

How to apply online

  • Complete the application at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn, selecting single or multiple entry and your intended port of entry.
  • Upload your passport photo page scan and a digital portrait photo.
  • Pay the e-Visa fee online by credit or debit card in USD.
  • Processing is officially up to 3 working days; download and print the approved e-Visa PDF once issued.
  • Present the printed e-Visa along with your passport at the port of entry you specified — Vietnamese immigration checks that your arrival point matches your e-Visa.

Fees & processing time

  • Single-entry e-Visa fee: approximately USD 25.
  • Multiple-entry e-Visa fee: approximately USD 50.
  • Standard processing time: officially up to 3 working days, though it can occasionally take longer during peak travel seasons.
  • No official express service is published through the government portal — some third-party agencies offer faster turnaround for an added fee, but the official portal is the safest option.
  • No additional service fee when applying directly through the official site.

Tips for United States travelers

  • Apply at least a week before travel to allow for the standard 3-day processing plus any buffer for unexpected delays.
  • Make sure the port of entry on your e-Visa exactly matches where you'll actually arrive — a mismatch can cause denial of boarding or entry.
  • Choose multiple-entry if your trip includes side trips to neighboring countries like Cambodia or Laos and a return to Vietnam.
  • Use only the official evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn portal — many look-alike third-party sites charge significantly more for the same visa.
  • Print your approved e-Visa rather than relying only on a digital copy, since some border posts still expect a paper printout.
