Canada Visa for United States Citizens 2026

Visa Free

US citizens traveling to Canada by air must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before boarding; those entering by land or sea do not require an eTA or visa.

Guide last updated September 3, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport validity: You must hold a valid US passport. It must be valid at the time of entry into Canada and for the duration of your stay; there is no fixed extra validity requirement beyond your passport expiry date.
  • Specific forms if any: For air travel you need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). There is no separate visa form for US citizens traveling as tourists; apply online at https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/etas.html. If entering by land or sea you do not need an eTA or visa.
  • Financial proof: There is no fixed minimum funds requirement, but you should be prepared to show you can support yourself during your stay if asked. Acceptable documents include recent bank statements, pay stubs, or a letter of support.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Have a confirmed accommodation address or hotel booking and be prepared to show onward or return travel if requested.
  • Photo/spec: For eTA there is no photo upload; your passport photo is used. Not applicable: photo requirements do not apply to the eTA.
  • Biometrics: Biometrics are not collected as part of the eTA application. If you later apply for a study or work permit, you may be required to provide biometrics at a Visa Application Centre.
  • Travel health insurance: Not required, but strongly recommended to have travel medical insurance covering emergencies during your stay.

Tips for United States travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: For eTA, apply after you know your travel plans; approvals are usually instant but allow up to 72 hours. For study/work permits, apply months in advance to account for processing times and biometrics appointments.
  • Common rejection reasons for United States applicants specifically: inconsistent travel history or purpose of visit, insufficient funds without clear evidence, invalid or expired passport, inaccuracies or omissions in the application, prior immigration violations, or failure to demonstrate ties to the United States.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: For eTA, there is no VFS/BLS process—apply online. For study/work permits, you apply through IRCC online; biometrics may be collected at a VAC/authorized centre if required.
  • Travel advisories or bilateral notes: Before travel, check the Government of Canada travel advisories and your local Canadian embassy/consulate for any entry requirements or restrictions; always verify up-to-date rules on the official IRCC site.
  • Extension options inside Canada: An eTA cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer than your allowed period, you must apply to extend your status as a temporary resident before your current status expires via IRCC; if approved, you may stay under the new conditions; otherwise you may need to leave Canada.
