What you need

  • Passport validity: Your US passport must be valid for the duration of your stay in Australia.
  • Specific forms: No separate DS-160 or VAF forms for ETA; you must have a valid US passport and create an ImmiAccount to apply online for the ETA (Subclass 601).
  • Financial proof: Not required for ETA; for other visas you may be asked to show funds (e.g., Visitor visa 600).
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Not required for ETA, but maintain a plan and sufficient funds; border officers may ask.
  • Photo spec: Not applicable for ETA as no photo upload is required.
  • Biometrics: Not required for ETA application.
  • Travel health insurance: Not required but strongly recommended.

Visa types

  • Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) Subclass 601: Validity 12 months from grant; stay up to 3 months per visit; multiple entries allowed; fee AUD 20.
  • Visitor visa Subclass 600 (Tourist/Business Visitor): Valid for up to 12 months in many cases; stay up to 12 months per visit depending on grant; single or multiple entries depending on grant; fee AUD 145.
  • Working Holiday visa Subclass 462: Valid for 12 months from grant; stay up to 12 months per visit; multiple entries allowed; fee AUD 485.
  • Student visa Subclass 500: Valid for the duration of the course (often up to several years); stay entire course duration; multiple entries allowed; fee AUD 650.

How to apply online

  • ETA (601): How to apply online: go to immi.homeaffairs.gov.au and create an ImmiAccount; select Electronic Travel Authority (Subclass 601); enter required personal details, passport information, and travel plans; pay AUD 20; you will receive an ETA grant number; the ETA is electronically linked to your passport and you do not need a visa label.
  • Visitor visa (600): Open ImmiAccount, choose Visitor visa (Subclass 600) – Tourist stream; complete the application, upload supporting documents (passport, travel itinerary, evidence of funds, ties to the US), pay AUD 145; processing times vary widely; you will receive a grant notification via your ImmiAccount or email.
  • Working Holiday visa (462): Open ImmiAccount, select Working Holiday visa (Subclass 462); verify eligibility (age 18–30); provide identity details, health and character declarations; upload documents as required; pay AUD 485; processing times vary; grant will be linked to your passport.
  • Student visa (500): Open ImmiAccount, choose Student visa (Subclass 500); provide CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment) from your Australian education provider, evidence of funds, English language proficiency, health and character checks as required; pay AUD 650; processing times vary; you may be asked to attend an interview or provide biometrics.

  • ETA (601): Fee AUD 20; approximate USD 13; standard processing time usually minutes to hours; express options not available; approval arrives instantly or via ImmiAccount.
  • Visitor visa (600): Fee AUD 145; approximate USD 95; standard processing time varies widely, typically several weeks to months; there is no separate express service; processing times depend on the country and stream.
  • Working Holiday visa (462): Fee AUD 485; approximate USD 320; typical processing time several weeks to a few months; may require health/character checks and sponsorship approval.
  • Student visa (500): Fee AUD 650; approximate USD 430; typical processing time a few weeks to several months depending on health checks, COE validation, and English tests; there is no express option.
  • VFS/BLS service fees: Not applicable for these visa types when applying directly via ImmiAccount from the United States; no third party service fees are required for standard online applications.
  • Total cost estimate: If you only apply for ETA it is AUD 20; If you pursue a Visitor visa (600) or Student visa (500) or Working Holiday visa (462) the costs are in addition to the base ETA if applied concurrently; Use the portal to estimate depending on your chosen stream.

Tips for United States travelers

  • Apply well in advance of travel: ETA can be obtained within minutes; Visitor and Student visas typically take weeks to months; start at least 1–3 months before travel for ETA and longer for study/work visas.
  • Common rejection reasons for US applicants: Insufficient funds or unclear evidence of funds; Lack of credible travel intent; Inadequate ties to the United States; Incomplete or inconsistent information; Health or character concerns; Not meeting age or English requirements for specific visas.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: For ETA and most online visa types, apply directly through ImmiAccount on the official portal; avoid non-authorized agents; for documents, use official channels and keep a copy of grant notices.
  • Travel advisories and bilateral notes: Always check the latest Department of State travel advisories and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade advisories before planning travel; note any entry restrictions or health requirements that may apply at your time of travel.
  • Extension options inside Australia: ETA cannot be extended; some visa types (600, 500) may allow extension or change of status if you apply before your current visa expires; otherwise you may need to depart Australia and re-apply from abroad or switch to another eligible visa category.
