What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into the UAE.
  • Specific forms: No pre-arrival visa application is required for US citizens; visa on arrival is granted at the port of entry.
  • Financial proof: There is no fixed minimum cash requirement; you should have access to funds to cover your stay.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: You may be asked for your hotel/address of stay; a confirmed return or onward ticket is recommended.
  • Photo spec: No separate photo submission is required at immigration; carry a passport photo only if requested by the airline/hotel.

  • Visit visa (sponsored) 90 days: Officially named 90-day Visit Visa (sponsored); validity 90 days; single entry; approximate fee around 600 AED.
  • Work, student, or residence visas: Require UAE employer or educational institution sponsorship and are not issued at the port of entry; processing through sponsor/embassy; fees vary.

How to apply

  • Visa on arrival: No online application. Upon arrival at a UAE airport or land port, present your passport, a return/onward ticket, and hotel or address details if requested. If approved, the 30-day visa stamp will be placed in your passport; extension is possible through UAE GDRFA offices for a further 30 days for a fee.
  • Visit visas (sponsored): The sponsor in the UAE (employer, hotel, or relative) must initiate the visa. Steps typically include the sponsor applying on your behalf, providing a copy of your passport, a passport photo, and a sponsorship letter. Processing time is usually 1–3 business days for approval; the visa is issued as an entry visa sticker or e-visa and will be recorded upon entry.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa on arrival: 100 AED; approx USD 27; no separate service fee; processing at entry; extension 100 AED for 30 additional days.
  • Visit visas (sponsored): 30-day around 350 AED; 90-day around 600 AED; service fees may apply via sponsor or travel agent; payments typically in AED to the sponsor or via the airline/hotel; processing times 1–3 business days for approval plus visa stamping on entry.
  • VFS/BLS service fees: Not applicable for visa on arrival; sticker visa bookings through VFS/BLS are processed for other visa categories and vary by sponsor.

Tips for United States travelers

  • Plan ahead for longer trips by arranging a sponsor-driven visit visa if you need more than 30 days.
  • If you fail to meet 6 months passport validity, or cannot show onward travel, you may be denied entry.
  • For VOAs, there is no separate visa application or interview; ensure you carry passport, return ticket, and hotel details ready.
  • When applying via a sponsor or airline, ensure the sponsor lists your name exactly as in your passport and that your passport copies are legible.
  • Check latest travel advisories and bilateral notes on the official UAE visa portal; bilateral relations or policy changes can affect visa rules.
