What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned entry date, with at least 2 blank visa pages.
  • A Letter of Invitation (LOI) issued by a government-registered Turkmen tour operator or sponsoring organization — required before you can even apply.
  • Completed visa application form (provided by the embassy or consulate once the LOI is confirmed).
  • Two passport-size photos (35mm x 45mm, white background, no glasses).
  • Proof of confirmed itinerary/tour booking, since independent travel is heavily restricted.
  • Travel health insurance valid in Turkmenistan.
  • No biometrics are typically collected for the sticker visa, but some posts may request fingerprints on arrival.

Visa types

  • Tourist visa: requires an LOI from a licensed tour operator, usually tied to an escorted itinerary; validity matches the approved trip dates, typically 5–20 days, single entry, fee varies by processing speed.
  • Transit visa: for travelers passing through to a third country, up to 5 days, requires proof of onward travel and a transit LOI.
  • Business visa: requires an LOI from the inviting Turkmen company, validity and stay length set by the invitation, single or multiple entry depending on sponsor.
  • There is no visa-on-arrival or e-Visa option for US citizens.

How to apply

  • Arrange a Letter of Invitation first — this must come from a tour operator (for tourist visas) or a Turkmen host company/entity (for business visas); independent, unsponsored tourism is effectively not possible.
  • Once the LOI is approved by Turkmen migration authorities (this step alone can take 2–4 weeks), submit your visa application, passport, photos, and the LOI to the Turkmenistan Embassy in Washington, DC (the main US point of contact) or collect your visa on arrival at Ashgabat airport if your LOI specifies airport pickup.
  • An in-person interview is sometimes required at the embassy.
  • Pay the visa fee in the accepted method (embassy cashier's check or money order; cash is often not accepted).
  • Most travelers use a specialized tour agency that handles the LOI and visa paperwork as part of a package.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: roughly USD 55–131 depending on visa type and number of entries, payable to the embassy/consulate.
  • LOI processing by Turkmen authorities: typically 15–30 days before the visa application can even be submitted.
  • Standard visa issuance after LOI approval: an additional 5–10 business days at the embassy.
  • Express LOI processing may be available through some tour operators for an extra fee, cutting the LOI wait to around 7–10 days.
  • Total realistic lead time, including the LOI, is often 4–6 weeks.

Tips for United States travelers

  • Start the process at least 2 months before travel — the Letter of Invitation step is the biggest bottleneck, not the embassy visa itself.
  • Book through a reputable, government-registered Turkmen tour operator; this is in practice the only reliable path to a tourist visa.
  • A common rejection reason is an incomplete or unverified LOI, or travel plans that don't match the approved itinerary exactly.
  • The Turkmenistan Embassy in Washington, DC is the main channel for US applicants; there is no VFS/BLS outsourcing center.
  • Carry printed copies of your LOI, visa, and itinerary at all times in-country, since local police checks are common and travel outside your approved route can cause problems.
