What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry into Togo; it must have at least 1 blank page for entry checks (recommended).
  • Specific forms: No separate Togolese visa form is required for US citizens applying for the e-visa. You will complete the online application on the official portal and upload the required documents. The US DS-160 is not used for the Togolese e-visa.
  • Financial proof: Financial proof is not a fixed requirement for the e-visa; you may be asked to show funds at the border, but there is no published minimum amount. It is prudent to carry enough funds to cover your stay.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Proof of accommodation is not strictly required for the e-visa, but having a confirmed hotel reservation or invitation letter and a return/onward ticket is advisable and may ease border checks.
  • Photo spec: You must upload a recent color passport photo when applying online. Specs: size 35x45 mm (3.5 x 4.5 cm), head height about 25–35 mm, white/neutral background, JPEG format, max file size 2 MB.
  • Biometrics: Biometrics are not required as part of the online e-visa application; border authorities may collect biometrics on arrival if required.
  • Travel health insurance: Travel health insurance is recommended but not mandatory for the e-visa.
  • Vaccinations: Yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers aged 9 months and older upon arrival; carry an International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card).
  • Documents to have on arrival: Print the e-visa approval, bring your passport, yellow fever certificate, and your travel itinerary and hotel details when possible.

Tips for United States travelers

  • Apply well in advance: aim for at least 7–14 days before your travel date to allow for any processing delays.
  • Common rejection reasons for US applicants: Incomplete or inconsistent information, passport data page mismatch, photos not meeting specs, missing yellow fever certificate when required, or inability to prove travel plans/invitation; ensure all uploaded documents are clear and match your passport.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy: For the e-visa you apply online via the official portal; no VFS/BLS submission is required unless you also pursue a separate embassy visa path.
  • Travel advisories: Check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State for Togo and follow safety guidance; be aware of general crime risk in certain areas and follow local authorities.
  • Extensions: E-visa extensions are typically not guaranteed and may require leaving the country and reapplying; consult Togolese immigration for any extension possibilities and ensure you depart or re-enter within visa limits.
