Visa on Arrival

US citizens can get a Tanzania tourist visa on arrival at major entry points, or apply in advance online — fee USD 50 for a single-entry tourist visa, valid for a 90-day stay.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with at least one blank visa page
  • Completed visa application (paper form on arrival, or online via eservices.immigration.go.tz in advance)
  • One recent passport-size photo
  • Proof of onward/return travel
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate required if arriving from, or having transited through, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission
  • Payment in USD cash (clean, undamaged bills) if paying on arrival

Visa types

  • Single-entry tourist visa — fee USD 50, valid for a stay of up to 90 days
  • Multiple-entry tourist visa — fee USD 100, valid up to 12 months with multiple visits
  • Business visa — fee USD 50 (single entry), requires an invitation letter from a Tanzanian company
  • Transit visa — fee USD 30, for short layovers with onward travel

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam), Kilimanjaro International Airport, Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (Zanzibar), and major land/sea border posts
  • Fill out the arrival visa form, present your passport, photo, and yellow fever certificate if required, and pay the fee in USD cash
  • Alternatively, apply online in advance through eservices.immigration.go.tz to receive a pre-approved visa and skip the on-arrival queue
  • Processing on arrival typically takes 15–45 minutes depending on queue length; online pre-approval usually takes 3–10 working days
  • Keep your receipt and approval printout until you've cleared immigration

Tips for United States travelers

  • Applying online in advance avoids the arrival queue, especially useful if your flight lands alongside several others
  • Bring crisp, undamaged USD bills — worn or old-series notes are sometimes refused
  • If you're planning a Kilimanjaro climb or multi-park safari lasting over 90 days, request the multiple-entry visa upfront
  • Carry your yellow fever certificate even if arriving directly from the US, since enforcement can vary by port and prior itinerary
  • Zanzibar has its own immigration checkpoint even though it's part of Tanzania — have your documents ready again there
