What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date

  • Proof of onward or return travel
  • Proof of accommodation
  • A GBAO permit is required separately if you plan to visit the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (Pamir Highway area), regardless of your general visa status

Visa types

  • Visa-free entry — up to 30 days for tourism, under current policy
  • e-Visa (via evisa.tj) — the standard route if visa-free entry does not apply to your specific travel dates or if you plan a longer or non-tourist stay; single entry, typically 45–90 days validity for a stay of up to 30–45 days
  • GBAO permit — add-on permit (not a visa) required for travel to the Pamir region, obtainable alongside an e-visa or separately for visa-free entrants
  • Business/work visa — requires an invitation and is processed through a Tajik consulate

Entry conditions

  • If traveling under the current visa-free allowance, you may stay up to 30 days without a visa or online application
  • No work is permitted under visa-free entry
  • If your trip plans or current rules require it, apply for the e-visa through evisa.tj well before departure instead
  • Extensions beyond the initial permitted stay require a visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or OVIR (visa registration office) in Dushanbe
  • All foreign visitors staying more than a few days are generally required to register their stay with local authorities (often handled automatically by hotels)

Fees & processing time

  • Visa-free entry: no fee
  • e-Visa (if applicable to your trip): approximately USD 50–75 depending on validity selected, processed online in 3–5 working days via evisa.tj
  • GBAO permit: a small additional fee (commonly under USD 10), can be added during the e-visa application or obtained in Dushanbe
  • Registration/extension fees at OVIR are modest, typically processed within a few days

  • If you plan to drive the Pamir Highway or visit Gorno-Badakhshan, arrange your GBAO permit in advance regardless of your general entry status
