Syria Visa for United States Citizens 2026

US citizens need a visa approved in advance by Syrian authorities before traveling to Syria, and US passports require special State Department validation for Syria travel; the US maintains a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory for the country.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
  • Special validation of your US passport for travel to Syria, which the US Department of State requires separately from any Syrian visa (standard US passports are not valid for travel to, in, or through Syria without this)
  • A completed visa application submitted to a Syrian embassy/consulate or through its online request system
  • A sponsor or invitation letter is typically required, especially for business travel
  • Passport-size photos for the application
  • Be aware the US State Department advises against all travel to Syria due to the security situation (Level 4: Do Not Travel)

Visa types

  • Tourist visa — single entry, subject to approval from Syrian authorities, validity and stay length set case by case
  • Business visa — requires an invitation from a Syrian entity and supporting documentation
  • Journalist visa — requires separate media accreditation
  • Transit visa — for short layovers with onward travel proof

How to apply online

  • Submit your visa request through the Syrian embassy's online request system or by contacting a Syrian consulate directly, since there is no walk-up visa-on-arrival option for US citizens
  • Applications are reviewed and approved individually by Syrian authorities in Damascus, which can take several weeks with no guaranteed outcome
  • Before applying, contact the US Department of State to request special validation of your passport for Syria travel — this is a separate, mandatory step for US citizens
  • Given the ongoing security situation, confirm that consular services are currently operating before submitting an application
  • Approval, when granted, is typically communicated by the embassy for pickup or endorsement onto your passport

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fees vary and are set by the Syrian embassy/consulate at the time of application (historically in the range of USD 100, subject to change)
  • Processing time is highly variable — commonly several weeks, with no guarantee of approval
  • Passport special validation through the US Department of State has its own processing time and must be completed well in advance
  • No express/priority service is available
