What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years

Visa types

  • Short-stay Schengen visa (Type C) — not needed by US citizens for stays up to 90 days
  • National visa (Type D) — required for stays over 90 days, study, or work; applied for at the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) or a Swedish consulate
  • Work permit — required for employment, applied for through Migrationsverket before travel
  • Student residence permit — required for courses longer than 90 days
