US citizens can obtain a Tourist ETA online for Sri Lanka via eta.gov.lk for visa on arrival; approval is typically issued within minutes to 24 hours and allows a 30-day, single-entry stay, payable in USD at the airport.

What you need

  • Passport validity: your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of arrival in Sri Lanka and have at least one blank page remaining.
  • Specific forms: no separate visa application form is required at a Sri Lankan embassy; apply online for an ETA at https://eta.gov.lk/slvisa/ and carry the ETA approval printout.
  • Financial proof: there is no requirement to submit bank statements or funds documentation for ETA; however, have access to sufficient funds for your stay and be prepared to show proof if requested by immigration (no fixed minimum is published).
  • Accommodation and return ticket: no mandatory pre-booking or return ticket is required for ETA, but carry hotel confirmations or a printed onward/return ticket in case immigration asks for proof.
  • Photo/specs: during online ETA application upload a recent passport-style photo (digital) with white background; typical size around 2x2 inches (51x51 mm), head centered, taken within last 6 months; file format JPEG/PNG, minimum resolution ~600x600 px, max file size ~2 MB.
  • Biometrics: no separate biometrics submission is required specifically for ETA; passport control procedures apply on arrival.
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory for ETA, but recommended to have travel health insurance that covers illness and emergencies during Sri Lanka stay.

Visa types

  • Tourist ETA (Tourist visa on arrival): official name Tourist ETA; validity 30 days from entry; max stay 30 days; single entry; approximate fee USD 35.
  • Business ETA: official name Business ETA; validity 30 days from entry; max stay 30 days; single entry; approximate fee USD 60–75.
  • Transit ETA: official name Transit ETA; validity typically up to 2–3 days for transit purposes; single entry; approximate fee USD 15.
  • Notes: all ETA types are processed online via the official portal; ensure you select the correct category for your purpose of visit; durations and fees are subject to change by the Sri Lankan authorities.

Visa on arrival

  • How to apply online: go to https://eta.gov.lk/slvisa/ and create an account; complete the online form with your personal details and passport data; upload required documents (passport scan and photo); select Tourist ETA (most common for tourism).
  • Ports and steps: the main entry point for visa on arrival under ETA is Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo; upon arrival present your passport, ETA approval printout, and passport photograph if requested by immigration; immigration will issue the entry stamp after you pay the applicable visa fee at the port (in USD).
  • Fee and currencies: ETA fee is paid online during the application (USD, via credit/debit card); if a separate airport-on-arrival fee applies, it is typically collected in USD at the terminal, so carry sufficient cash in USD.
  • Queue tips: arrive early in the day during peak travel seasons; have your ETA approval, passport, and hotel/itinerary handy; be prepared for typical immigration queues and possible document checks.

Tips for United States travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: apply as early as possible, ideally 3–7 days before travel; you can apply earlier, but ensure your travel dates align with the ETA validity window.
  • Common rejection reasons for United States applicants: mismatched passport data (name, date of birth), passport not valid for 6 months beyond travel date, photo quality issues, incomplete travel details, or previous visa/immigration flags. Double-check all information before submission.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: Sri Lanka ETA is designed for online application and on-arrival processing; there is no separate VFS/BLS processing for ETA; only use the official eta.gov.lk portal to avoid third-party fees or scams.
  • Travel advisories or bilateral notes: consult the U.S. Department of State travel advisory for Sri Lanka for current alerts and entry requirements; conditions can change rapidly in some regions.
