Entry conditions

Tips for United States travelers

  • When to apply: For short stays (visa-free), no pre-travel visa application is required. For long-stay plans (study, work, residency), start the application at least 2–3 months before your intended travel date, and plan for possible processing times that can exceed 8–12 weeks.
  • Common rejection reasons (US applicants): ties to the United States not clearly demonstrated (home ties, employment, family), insufficient funds or inconsistent financial documentation, incomplete or forged documents, mismatch between stated travel purpose and documents.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy: Short-stay entry requires no consular appointment; long-stay visa applications are usually submitted via the Spanish Consulate or through an approved service provider (VFS Global/BLS) as instructed by the specific consulate; verify the submission method for your location.
