US citizens can enter Romania visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period, now counted together with the rest of the Schengen Area following Romania's full Schengen accession.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area
  • Proof of onward/return travel
  • Proof of accommodation and sufficient funds may be requested at the border
  • No visa application or photo required
  • Travel health insurance covering Europe recommended
  • ETIAS authorization is expected to be required once implemented across the Schengen Area, Romania included

Visa types

  • Short-stay Schengen-exempt entry: tourism and business visits for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period, shared with the rest of the Schengen Area following Romania's full accession
  • Longer stays require a Romanian long-stay (D-type) visa or residence permit applied for in advance

  • ETIAS, once mandatory, will cost around EUR 7 with processing usually within minutes to a few days
  • Romanian long-stay visas have consulate fees typically around EUR 80-120 and processing times of several weeks

Tips for United States travelers

  • Since Romania's full Schengen accession, your 90 days there count against the same 180-day pool as France, Germany, etc. — track total days carefully if touring multiple European countries
  • Keep hotel and transport receipts in case of a border check
  • If staying longer, apply for a Romanian D-visa at a consulate before traveling, since it can't be converted from visa-free status after arrival
  • The Romanian leu is the local currency — euros are not generally accepted for everyday purchases outside tourist zones
