US citizens need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before flying, applied online or via the NZeTA app for NZD 17-23 plus a NZD 100 International Visitor Levy, with most approvals arriving within 72 hours and allowing stays up to 90 days.

Visa types

  • NZeTA (visitor): covers tourism, business visits, and transit, valid for multiple entries over 2 years, allows stays up to 90 days per visit, fee NZD 17 (via app) or NZD 23 (via website) plus the NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL)
  • Standard visitor visa (paper application): only needed if traveling for purposes outside the Visa Waiver Programme scope, such as longer stays or certain work activities
  • Work and study generally require a separate New Zealand visa applied for in advance, not covered by the NZeTA

  • Common rejection/delay reasons: blurry passport photo upload, previous visa or immigration issues, incomplete eligibility answers
  • Airlines will check for a valid NZeTA at check-in, so have your confirmation ready
  • Extensions beyond 90 days require an in-country application to Immigration New Zealand and are not guaranteed
  • Combine your NZeTA application with checking New Zealand's biosecurity rules, since customs declarations for food and outdoor equipment are strictly enforced on arrival
