What you need

  • Return or onward ticket

  • Biometrics: none required for visa-free entry (ETIAS registration, once active, will not require biometrics either)
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, not mandatory for US passport holders

Visa types

  • Not applicable for tourism/business under 90 days - entry is visa-free under the Schengen visa waiver
  • Long-stay (over 90 days) or work/study purposes require a Dutch national visa (MVV) plus a residence permit, applied for at the Dutch Embassy or Consulate in the US before travel
  • Business visitors attending short meetings or conferences also fall under the 90-day visa-free allowance

Entry conditions

  • US citizens may stay up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen area (not just the Netherlands)

  • For stays beyond 90 days (e.g., digital nomad or study plans), apply for the relevant Dutch visa at the embassy in Washington DC several weeks ahead
