Myanmar Visa for United States Citizens 2026

US citizens can apply for Tourist or Business e-Visa to Myanmar online at https://evisa.moip.gov.mm/; e-Visa fee is USD 50 with processing around 3–4 business days.

What you need

  • Passport validity: your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Myanmar and have at least 2 blank visa pages.
  • Documents for online submission: upload a color scanned copy of the passport bio page and a digital passport-style photo as part of the e-visa application; no DS-160 or embassy forms are required for the e-visa.
  • Financial proof: no specific bank statements or funds requirement are listed as mandatory for the e-visa application.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: provide the address where you will stay in Myanmar (hotel name and address) and a return/onward travel plan; border officers may request confirmation of onward travel.
  • Photo spec: digital photo in JPEG/JPG format, 2x2 inches (51x51 mm), white background, full-face, no hats or sunglasses, high resolution and clear; upload with the passport copy.
  • Biometrics: no in-person biometrics appointment or submission is required for the online e-visa.
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory for the e-visa, but recommended to have travel health insurance during your trip.

Visa types

  • Tourist e-Visa: official name Tourist e-Visa; validity 90 days from date of issue; maximum stay 28 days; single entry; approximate fee USD 50.
  • Business e-Visa: official name Business e-Visa; validity 90 days from date of issue; maximum stay 70 days; single entry; approximate fee USD 50.
  • Note: Both categories are single-entry by the e-visa system; ensure you select the correct type for your purpose; multiple-entry e-visas are not indicated for these online categories.

How to apply online

  • How to apply online: start at https://evisa.moip.gov.mm/; you may need to create a user account or log in.
  • Steps:
  • 1) Choose visa type (Tourist or Business) and purpose; 2) Enter applicant details exactly as they appear on your passport (full name, date of birth, gender, nationality); 3) Enter passport information (number, issue date, expiration date) and travel details (intended date of arrival, port of entry, Myanmar address); 4) Upload required documents: passport bio page and a digital photo in the specified formats; 5) Pay the e-visa fee with a credit or debit card (Visa/MasterCard; UnionPay may be accepted depending on card issuer); 6) Submit the application and note your reference number; 7) Processing time is typically 3–4 business days; 8) The approval is sent by email and you can also check status on the portal; print the e-visa approval page and carry it to Myanmar.
  • Entry points: e-visa holders may enter through Yangon International Airport (RGN), Nay Pyi Taw International Airport (NAY), or Mandalay International Airport (MDL).
  • Important: The e-visa approval does not guarantee entry; border immigration officers may request additional documents or deny entry at the port of entry.

  • Additional charges: credit/debit card processing fees may apply via the payment gateway; the government-listed fee is USD 50.
  • Total cost estimate: USD 50 for the e-visa plus any card processing fees.
  • Standard processing time: typically 3–4 business days from the time of application submission.
  • Express/priority option: not clearly listed on the official e-visa portal; travelers should plan for the standard processing window and check the portal for any updated options.
  • If the application is rejected, you must reapply and pay the fee again.

Tips for United States travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: plan to apply at least 7–10 days before your intended travel date to account for processing and potential issues; apply as early as you comfortably can.
  • Common rejection reasons for US applicants: passport data mismatch (name or date of birth mismatch with passport), passport validity under 6 months at date of arrival, poor photo quality or incorrect photo specs, travel plans or entry port details that seem inconsistent, and errors in contact details or itinerary.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy: for the e-visa you apply directly online via the official MOI portal; VFS/BLS are typically used for sticker visas processed through embassies and are not part of the MOI e-visa process.
  • Travel advisories: verify the latest US State Department travel advisory for Myanmar (travel.state.gov) before planning travel; conditions can change due to security and political developments; ensure you have up-to-date information and follow local guidance.
  • Extension options inside Myanmar: extensions may be possible by Myanmar Immigration Department offices in Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw, or Mandalay; extension rules and processing times vary and are subject to approval; consult the Myanmar Immigration Department or your local embassy/consulate for current procedures.
