What you need

  • Passport validity: passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry and have at least 2 blank pages.
  • Specific forms: no DS-160 or similar Mozambican form; use the online eVisa application at https://evisa.gov.mz/; no separate Mozambican embassy form is required for the online route.
  • Financial proof: not routinely required for the online eVisa, but be prepared to show funds if requested by immigration officials on arrival.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: provide proof of hotel booking or invite letter and evidence of onward or return travel (return flight itinerary).
  • Photo spec: upload a passport-style photo (35x45 mm / 3.5 x 4.5 cm) with a plain white background; accepted formats include JPEG/PNG; file size typically under 1 MB.
  • Biometrics: biometrics are not required for the online eVisa; if requested, you may be asked to provide biometrics at the border or a Mozambican embassy.
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory, but strongly recommended to have adequate health coverage for the duration of your stay.

  • Student eVisa: official name Student eVisa; validity 12 months; max stay per entry 90 days (subject to the study program); entry: multiple entries; approximate fee USD 120.
  • Work eVisa: official name Work eVisa; validity 12 months; max stay per entry 90 days (subject to work contract); entry: multiple entries; approximate fee USD 150.

How to apply online

  • How to apply online: go to https://evisa.gov.mz/ and create an account.
  • Steps: choose visa type, complete the online application form with personal data, upload required documents (passport bio page, photo, travel itinerary, accommodation details), pay the visa fee online, and submit.
  • Fees (local + USD): fees are shown in USD on the portal and converted to Mozambican Metical (MZN) at the time of payment; exact local currency amount will be displayed during checkout.
  • Processing time: standard processing typically 2–3 business days; expedited processing (if available) may be offered for an additional fee and can be 24 hours.
  • How approval arrives: approval is sent by email as a downloadable eVisa; print the eVisa and present it at the port of entry in Mozambique.

Tips for United States travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: apply at least 14–21 days before travel; during peak travel periods allow 3–4 weeks.
  • Common rejection reasons for U.S. applicants: mismatched passport data, passport validity too short, missing or blurry documents, photos not meeting specs, inconsistent travel plans or accommodation details, or attempting to enter with an eVisa that does not match your purpose of visit.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: Mozambique’s online eVisa is the preferred route for U.S. citizens; paper visas processed via Mozambican embassies/consulates may exist but typically take longer and require in-person submission.
  • Travel advisories or bilateral notes: check the U.S. Department of State travel advisory for Mozambique before travel and review any health advisories; ensure your passport and visas comply with Mozambique entry requirements.
