What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of your stay (a passport card is also accepted for land/sea entry, but not for air travel).

Visa types

  • No visa is required for tourism or business visits up to 180 days; the FMM tourist permit covers this.
  • Temporary Resident Visa - required for stays over 180 days or for work/study, applied for in advance at a Mexican consulate in the US, approximate fee USD 44 plus consular service fee.
  • Work Visa - required for paid employment, sponsored by a Mexican employer, applied for through the National Immigration Institute (INM).

Tips for United States travelers

  • Keep your FMM tourist card throughout your stay and surrender it upon departure, as losing it can cause delays or fines when exiting.
  • Common issue: travelers staying beyond the 180 days granted on their FMM face fines at departure.
  • No VFS/BLS center is used; the FMM process is handled directly by INM (https://www.inm.gob.mx/gobmx/word/index.php/visas/) at ports of entry.
  • Check current US State Department travel advisories, as some Mexican states carry elevated security warnings.
  • For long-term stays, apply for temporary residency at a Mexican consulate in the US (https://www.gob.mx/sre) before traveling, since this cannot be converted from tourist status within Mexico in most cases.
