US citizens can enter Malaysia visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism or business; no visa is required, but travelers must complete the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within 3 days before arrival.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
  • Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), completed online at windowmalaysia.my up to 3 days before arrival; free of charge
  • Proof of onward or return travel
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • No photo required for visa-free entry or the MDAC
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and a photo are taken at immigration on arrival
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory but recommended

Visa types

  • No visa category applies to tourist or short business visits of up to 90 days for US citizens
  • Social visit pass (extension): issued at immigration if you need to extend your stay beyond the initial 90 days, subject to approval
  • Employment pass or student pass: required for work or study, applied for in advance through Malaysian immigration or an employer/institution sponsor

Tips for United States travelers

  • Complete the MDAC at https://www.windowmalaysia.my/evisa no earlier than 3 days before arrival, as earlier submissions can be rejected
  • Keep a digital or printed copy of your MDAC confirmation to show at immigration
  • Carry proof of onward travel, since Malaysian immigration occasionally checks this closely for travelers without an onward flight booked
  • If visiting Malaysian Borneo (Sabah or Sarawak) after Peninsular Malaysia, note that a separate immigration check and sometimes a new 90-day count applies
