US citizens can visit Iceland visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period, as Iceland participates in the Schengen Area despite not being an EU member.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • No visa application required for short stays
  • Proof of sufficient funds (rarely checked, but recommended)
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking, guesthouse, or host details)
  • Travel health insurance recommended, especially given Iceland's remote terrain and higher medical costs
  • ETIAS online pre-authorization (approx. EUR 7) will be required once the system goes live

Visa types

  • No visa needed for tourism, business, or family visits under the Schengen 90/180-day rule
  • Longer stays, study, or employment require an Icelandic residence permit or long-term visa obtained from the Directorate of Immigration (Útlendingastofnun)
  • Iceland offers a Long-Term Visa for Remote Workers for those wanting to stay up to 180 days while working remotely for a non-Icelandic employer, a separate application from tourist entry

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area, not just Iceland
  • Paid employment for an Icelandic employer is not permitted under visa-free entry
  • Entry is via Keflavík International Airport or any Schengen-compliant port of entry
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are only possible in exceptional circumstances through the Directorate of Immigration
  • The 90-day count includes time spent in any other Schengen country during the same 180-day window

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the current visa-free short-stay entry
  • Processing: immediate at border control
  • ETIAS fee once mandatory: approx. EUR 7 for travelers 18-70, usually approved within minutes
  • Remote Worker Long-Term Visa: government fee approx. ISK 20,000-25,000 (about USD 140-180), with processing of 4-8 weeks

  • Iceland's weather can disrupt domestic connections and ring-road travel — build flexibility into itineraries, especially in winter
  • The Remote Worker Long-Term Visa is a good option if you want to stay beyond 90 days while still working for a US employer
  • Apply for ETIAS as soon as it's required for your travel dates
  • Rental car insurance is strongly recommended given Iceland's gravel roads and variable weather conditions
