Hungary Visa for United States Citizens 2026

US citizens can visit Hungary visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period under the Schengen Agreement, with ETIAS pre-authorization expected to become mandatory from late 2026.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • No visa application required for short stays
  • Proof of sufficient funds (rarely checked, but recommended)
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host details)
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is recommended
  • ETIAS online pre-authorization (approx. EUR 7) will be required once the system goes live

Visa types

  • No visa needed for tourism, business, or family visits under the Schengen 90/180-day rule
  • Longer stays, study, or employment require a Hungarian National (Type D) visa obtained in advance from a Hungarian consulate
  • Hungary also runs a White Card digital nomad residence permit for remote workers wanting to stay longer than 90 days, a separate application from the visa-free entry

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area, not just Hungary
  • Paid employment is not permitted under visa-free entry
  • Entry is via Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport or any Schengen land/air/sea border
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are only possible in exceptional circumstances via the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing
  • The 90-day count includes time already spent in any other Schengen country in the same 180-day window

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the current visa-free short-stay entry
  • Processing: immediate at border control
  • ETIAS fee once mandatory: approx. EUR 7 for travelers 18-70, usually approved within minutes
  • Hungarian Type D visa (if needed): consulate fee approx. EUR 80-100, with 15-30 business days processing
  • White Card digital nomad permit: government fee approx. EUR 110, processed in about 30 days

Tips for United States travelers

  • Track your cumulative Schengen days if combining Hungary with trips to other European countries in the same window
  • Common issue: travelers forgetting that time in other Schengen countries counts toward the shared 90-day limit
  • Hungary's White Card is a good option for US remote workers wanting a longer, legal stay beyond 90 days
  • Apply for ETIAS as soon as it's required for your travel dates
  • Carry proof of accommodation, as Hungarian border officers occasionally request it during spot checks
