US citizens can visit Greece visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period as part of the Schengen Area, with ETIAS pre-authorization expected to become mandatory from late 2026.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • No visa application required for short stays
  • Proof of sufficient funds (rarely checked, but recommended to carry evidence)
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking, rental confirmation, or host details)
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is recommended
  • ETIAS online pre-authorization (approx. EUR 7) will be required once the system goes live

Visa types

  • No visa needed for tourism, business, or family visits under the Schengen 90/180-day rule
  • Longer stays, study, or employment require a Greek National (Type D) visa obtained in advance from a Greek consulate
  • Common Type D categories: Digital Nomad Visa, Student Visa, Work Visa, Golden Visa (investment-based residence)

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area, not per country
  • Paid employment is not permitted under visa-free entry
  • Entry is via passport control at any Greek airport, port, or land border
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are granted only in exceptional cases through the local Aliens and Immigration Office
  • The 90-day count includes time spent in any other Schengen country during the same 180-day window

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the current visa-free short-stay entry
  • Processing: immediate at border control
  • ETIAS fee once mandatory: approx. EUR 7 for travelers 18-70, usually approved within minutes, up to 4 days if flagged for review
  • Greek Type D visa (if needed): consulate fee approx. EUR 75-180 depending on category, with 15-30 business days processing

  • Keep a running count of Schengen days if island-hopping through Greece and visiting other EU countries in the same trip
  • Common issue: travelers overstaying because they forget time spent in other Schengen countries counts toward the 90 days
  • Greece's Digital Nomad Visa is a popular option for US remote workers wanting to stay longer than 90 days
  • Apply for ETIAS as soon as it's required, ideally right after booking flights
