US citizens need a visa before traveling to Ghana, obtained through the Ghanaian embassy/consulate or an authorized visa service; a standard tourist visa costs around USD 60 and takes 5-10 business days.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed Ghana visa application form (available online from the embassy/consulate)
  • Two recent passport-size photos (2x2 inches, white background)
  • Proof of yellow fever vaccination (mandatory for entry into Ghana)
  • Round-trip flight itinerary
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter from a host in Ghana)
  • Bank statement showing sufficient funds (last 3 months)
  • Biometrics may be collected in person depending on the consulate/VFS location processing the application

Visa types

  • Single-entry Tourist/Business visa: valid for use within 3 months of issue, max stay 60-90 days, approx. USD 60
  • Multiple-entry visa (6 or 12 months): for frequent travelers, approx. USD 100-150
  • Transit visa: for layovers requiring entry into Ghana, approx. USD 30
  • Work and student visas require a separate category with supporting employer/institution documentation

How to apply

  • Apply at the nearest Ghanaian embassy or consulate, or online via Ghana's e-visa/consular portal where available
  • Complete the application form and gather all required documents listed above
  • Submit application in person, by mail, or via an authorized visa service, along with payment
  • Some applicants may be required to attend an interview or provide biometrics at the consulate
  • Standard processing takes 5-10 business days; expedited service may be available for an extra fee at select consulates
  • Visa is issued as a sticker in your passport or an approval letter to present on arrival, depending on the consulate

Tips for United States travelers
