What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area
  • Passport issued within the last 10 years
  • Proof of onward/return travel
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • Proof of sufficient funds (roughly EUR 95/day is commonly cited as a reference, though this is rarely checked for US passport holders)
  • Travel health insurance is recommended though not mandatory for US citizens
  • No visa application, biometrics, or photo submission required for stays under 90 days

Visa types

  • No visa is required for tourism, business meetings, or family visits of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen area
  • Stays longer than 90 days, employment, or study require a national (type D) visa or residence permit applied for in advance through the Belgian embassy/consulate in the US

Entry conditions

  • Maximum stay: 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, counted across all Schengen countries combined, not per country
  • No work is permitted on visa-free entry; business visits are limited to meetings, conferences, and negotiations
  • At the border you may be asked to show your return ticket, hotel booking, and proof of funds
  • Entry/exit is tracked by passport stamps (moving to the EU's Entry/Exit System, EES, which records biometrics at the border)
  • Starting with the EU's ETIAS travel authorization rollout, US citizens will additionally need to register online (small fee, valid multiple years) before visa-free entry — check current status before booking
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are only granted in exceptional circumstances (medical emergency, force majeure) via the Belgian Immigration Office (dofi.ibz.be)

Fees & processing time

  • ETIAS authorization (once mandatory) is expected to cost around EUR 7 and be approved within minutes to a few days online
  • No processing time for entry itself — admission is decided by the border officer on arrival

Tips for United States travelers

  • Track your Schengen days carefully if you're combining Belgium with other EU trips — overstaying the 90/180 rule can trigger an entry ban
  • Keep a copy of your hotel bookings and return ticket accessible for border checks
  • Register your trip with the US Embassy in Brussels (STEP program) for travel alerts
  • If you plan to work remotely for an extended period, note that Belgium does not offer a separate "digital nomad" visa-free allowance — the 90-day limit still applies
  • Once ETIAS is required, apply at least a few days before travel even though approval is usually fast
