Vatican Visa for Pakistan Citizens 2026

Visa Required

Pakistani citizens cannot obtain a separate Vatican visa — since Vatican City has no border control and is accessed through Italy, entry requires a valid Italian/Schengen visa; fee EUR 90 (~USD 97), processing 15 calendar days.

Guide last updated October 21, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • Completed Schengen visa application form (since Vatican City itself issues no visas and has open borders with Italy)
  • Two recent passport-size photos (35x45mm, Schengen specification)
  • Confirmed round-trip flight itinerary to/from Italy
  • Proof of accommodation in Italy covering the whole stay, including any Vatican visit
  • Travel medical insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage, valid across the Schengen area
  • Bank statements (last 3-6 months) and employment/business proof
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at the Italian visa application centre (VFS Global) in Islamabad or Karachi

Visa types

  • Schengen (Italy) Short-Stay Visa, Type C — single, double, or multiple entry, valid for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period; this is the only route to visit Vatican City
  • No separate Vatican-specific visa category exists for tourists, as the Vatican relies on Italy's external Schengen border
  • Official/diplomatic visits to the Holy See follow a distinct protocol channel arranged through diplomatic missions, not available to ordinary tourists

How to apply

  • Apply for an Italian Schengen visa through the VFS Global Italy visa application centre in Islamabad or Karachi
  • Submit the Schengen application form, photos, passport, and supporting documents (flight itinerary, accommodation, insurance, financial proof)
  • Attend a biometrics appointment; an interview may be required depending on the applicant's profile
  • Once the Italian/Schengen visa is approved, enter through Italy and visit Vatican City as a day trip or scheduled tour — no further formality is needed to cross into Vatican grounds
  • Keep the visa and passport on hand at all times, as spot checks can occur near Vatican entry points

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: EUR 90 (~USD 97) for adults
  • VFS Global service fee: approx. PKR 5,000-6,000 (~USD 18-22)
  • Standard processing time: up to 15 calendar days, extendable to 30-45 days in complex cases
  • No dedicated express service for Pakistani applicants through the standard visitor category
  • Total realistic budget: USD 120-150

Tips for Pakistan travelers

  • Apply for the Italian Schengen visa at least 4-6 weeks before travel, since Vatican access depends entirely on this visa being approved
  • Clearly state in the application that the Vatican/Holy See is part of the itinerary, supported by a tour booking or papal audience ticket if applicable
  • Common refusal reasons mirror general Schengen refusals: insufficient funds, weak travel history, or unclear itinerary
  • St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums have separate ticketing systems unrelated to visa requirements — book these once the visa is secured
  • If the Schengen visa lists Italy as the main destination, keep most of your Schengen-area time in Italy, since the Vatican visit itself is typically a short excursion
  • No Vatican-specific extension exists; any stay extension must go through Italian immigration authorities
