Guide last updated October 20, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed and signed Schengen visa application form
  • Two recent passport-size photos (35mm x 45mm, white background, taken within the last 6 months)
  • Travel medical insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage valid across the Schengen area
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or formal invitation letter)
  • Bank statements for the last 3-6 months showing sufficient funds
  • Proof of employment (employment letter, pay slips) or business registration documents
  • Round-trip flight itinerary
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and digital photo) collected in person at the VFS center

Visa types

  • Schengen short-stay visa (Type C): single, double, or multiple entry, valid up to 90 days within a 180-day period, covers tourism, business, and family visits
  • National long-stay visa (Type D/MVV): required for work, study, or family reunification exceeding 90 days, with a separate and more document-intensive process

How to apply

  • Book an appointment with VFS Global Islamabad or Karachi (authorized to accept applications for the Dutch Embassy)
  • Complete the online application form (via the VFS or Netherlands Visa Information System) and gather all supporting documents
  • Attend the appointment for document submission and biometrics
  • Standard processing takes up to 15 working days, though it can extend to 30-45 days during peak season or if additional checks are needed
  • Approved visa is stamped into the passport, collected in person or via courier

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: EUR 80 for adults, EUR 40 for children aged 6-12
  • VFS service fee: approximately PKR 6,500-8,500
  • Total cost estimate: USD 110-150
  • Standard processing: up to 15 working days
  • Priority/express service may be available at VFS for an additional fee, cutting wait time for appointment booking but not guaranteeing faster embassy decision

Tips for Pakistan travelers

  • Apply at least 6-8 weeks before travel, since Dutch Schengen processing for Pakistani applicants can take longer than the stated 15 days
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient funds, weak ties to Pakistan, inconsistent or unverifiable travel history
  • If the Netherlands is not your main Schengen destination, apply through the embassy/consulate of the country where you'll spend the most days or which is your first point of entry
  • Keep certified translations ready for any Urdu documents
  • Extensions inside the Schengen area are rarely granted and only for exceptional circumstances (medical emergency, force majeure)
