Guide last updated October 19, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay
  • A confirmed booking with a licensed Bhutanese tour operator (required for visa clearance)
  • Scanned passport bio-data page
  • Digital passport-size photo
  • Confirmed flight itinerary (into and out of Paro, or entry via land border)
  • Full prepayment or deposit for the tour package, as required by the operator
  • Travel/health insurance recommended given Bhutan's mountainous terrain
  • No biometrics required at the online clearance stage

Visa types

  • Tourist visa clearance: issued once a tour operator submits the application via the Department of Immigration's online system, typically valid for the trip duration arranged
  • Business visa: for meetings or conferences, arranged through a sponsoring local entity
  • Note: unlike India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, Pakistani nationals do not get visa-free or on-arrival entry and must go through the standard tourist visa process

How to apply online

  • Select and book with a Bhutan Tourism Council-licensed tour operator
  • The operator submits the visa application on your behalf through the online Department of Immigration system
  • Pay the visa fee and Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) as part of the tour package cost
  • Receive the visa clearance letter by email; present it along with the passport on arrival, when the actual visa stamp is issued

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: USD 40 (one-time, non-refundable)
  • Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): USD 100 per person per night for most nationalities, including Pakistan
  • Total estimated cost: USD 40 plus (USD 100 x number of nights), on top of the tour package price
  • Standard processing time: a few business days once the tour operator submits the application
  • No separate express service; timelines depend on the operator's submission speed

Tips for Pakistan travelers

  • Book with the tour operator at least 3-4 weeks before travel to allow time for visa clearance
  • Common rejection reasons: incomplete tour booking details, mismatched passport information
  • Confirm the SDF and all-inclusive package costs upfront, as these form the bulk of trip expenses
  • Carry both the visa clearance letter and passport for immigration checks on arrival
  • Extensions of stay must be arranged through the same tour operator with the Department of Immigration
