What you need

  • Passport valid for the intended duration of stay, with at least one blank page
  • Completed online application via the gov.uk visa service
  • Digital photo meeting UK specifications, uploaded during the online application
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) collected in person at a UK Visa Application Centre (VAC), run by TLScontact or VFS Global in major Chinese cities
  • Bank statements for the last 6 months, proof of employment or business ownership, and a clear travel itinerary
  • Proof of accommodation and return flight booking
  • Travel health insurance is recommended, not mandatory, and the Immigration Health Surcharge does not apply to short visitor visas

Visa types

  • Standard Visitor visa, single or multiple entry, valid typically 6 months per visit, fee £115
  • Long-validity Standard Visitor visa options for frequent travelers: 2-year (£400), 5-year (£771), and 10-year (£1,000) multiple-entry visas, each allowing stays of up to 6 months per visit
  • Business Visitor and Academic Visitor categories fall under the same Standard Visitor visa with slightly different supporting evidence

How to apply

  • Complete the online application on gov.uk, selecting the visa validity option (6 months, 2, 5, or 10 years)
  • Pay the visa fee online by credit/debit card
  • Book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (e.g., Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, or Chengdu) to submit biometrics and supporting documents
  • Attend the appointment; an interview is only required in select cases, but all applicants provide fingerprints and a photo
  • Standard processing is around 3 weeks (15 working days) from the biometric appointment; a priority service (5 working days) is available for an extra fee

  • Multiple-entry long-validity visas (2/5/10-year) are cost-effective for travelers who visit the UK regularly
  • Keep your biometric appointment confirmation handy, since VACs require it for entry to the centre
