What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of the intended stay, with at least 1 blank page
  • Digital passport-style photo, white background, uploaded during the e-visa application
  • Confirmed round-trip flight itinerary
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking) for the stay
  • Bank statements or an employment letter showing financial stability
  • Some e-visa categories require application through a registered Chinese travel agency acting as a guarantor rather than a fully individual application
  • No biometrics required for the e-visa itself; photo and fingerprints are captured at the airport immigration counter on arrival as part of Japan's standard entry procedure

Visa types

  • Single-entry tourist e-visa — valid for a stay of up to 15 or 30 days depending on the specific e-visa scheme used, single entry only
  • Multiple-entry tourist visa — a separate traditional visa category (not the e-visa) available to applicants with sufficient income or prior Japan travel history, allowing repeated entries over 3-5 years
  • Business e-visa — for short business trips, requires an invitation from the Japanese host company
  • Transit visa — for layovers requiring entry into Japan, usually not needed for same-day airside transits

How to apply online

  • Complete the application on the official Japan e-visa portal (evisa.mofa.go.jp) or through an approved travel agency if required for your e-visa category
  • Upload the passport bio page, photo, and supporting travel documents
  • Pay the e-visa fee online
  • Processing is typically completed within about 5 business days; approval is issued electronically with a QR code or reference number
  • Present the printed or digital e-visa confirmation along with your passport at check-in and on arrival in Japan
  • Standard immigration procedures (photo and fingerprint scan) are completed at the airport

Tips for China travelers

  • Apply through an authorised channel appropriate to your e-visa category, as some tourist e-visas require a registered Chinese travel agency's involvement rather than a purely individual application
  • Common rejection reasons: unclear photo, inconsistent passport details, insufficient proof of funds or return intent
  • Book onward or return flights before applying, since confirmed itineraries are checked closely
  • If planning repeat visits to Japan, consider the traditional multiple-entry visa route instead of re-applying for a single-entry e-visa each time
  • Extensions beyond the granted stay are rarely approved inside Japan; plan the full trip length before applying
