  • Completed visa application form from the Turkmen embassy or consulate
  • Two passport-sized photos (white background)
  • Confirmed itinerary and, for tourist visas, a government-registered guide for the full duration of the stay
  • Financial proof may be requested, though the LOI largely substitutes for this
  • No biometrics collected at application; checks may occur on arrival at Ashgabat International Airport
  • Travel health insurance is recommended; a yellow fever certificate may be requested if arriving from an endemic country

Visa types

  • Tourist visa, issued against an LOI with a fixed, pre-approved itinerary and mandatory licensed guide, often valid for the exact LOI dates (commonly 5-10 days), fee approx. $55-85 USD plus an LOI service cost of $30-150 depending on the agency
  • Business visa, requires an LOI from the inviting Turkmen company, validity and fee set case-by-case, generally 30 days single or multiple entry
  • Transit visa, for travelers passing through to a third country, shorter validity (3-5 days), simplified documentation

How to apply

  • Arrange a Letter of Invitation through a licensed Turkmen tour operator (tourist visas) or your business host (business visas) — this step alone commonly takes 2-3 weeks
  • Once the LOI is approved by the Turkmen MFA, submit the visa application, passport, photos, and LOI reference number to the Turkmen embassy or consulate handling China
  • Pay the visa fee as instructed by the specific mission
  • Collect the visa sticker from the embassy, or have approval confirmed for collection on arrival at Ashgabat airport
  • Total process, including LOI approval, commonly takes 3-4 weeks; rushed LOIs are sometimes available at a premium

  • Work only with tour operators officially licensed by the Turkmen government to avoid LOI rejections
