What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from the Schengen area. It must be issued within the last 10 years and have at least two blank pages for visas and entry/exit stamps.
  • Specific forms: Schengen visa application form (the standard Schengen visa form), completed online or printed and signed.
  • Financial proof: Bank statements for the last 3 months showing sufficient funds for the stay; an employer letter or payslips; if self-employed, business registration documents and latest tax returns; if sponsored, a sponsorship letter and sponsor's financial proof.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Proof of accommodation for the entire stay (hotel bookings or an invitation letter from a host in Sweden) and proof of return or onward travel (flight reservation).
  • Photo spec: 35 x 45 mm (3.5 x 4.5 cm) photo, full face, light/white background, taken within the last 6 months, no sunglasses, head coverings allowed only for religious or medical reasons with a prior explanation.
  • Biometrics: Biometric data collection is required for first-time applicants; submitted at the embassy/consulate or visa application centre. If you have provided biometrics in the last 59 months, you may be exempt.
  • Travel health insurance: Travel medical insurance is mandatory for Schengen visas; minimum coverage 30,000 EUR; insurance must be valid in all Schengen states and cover medical emergencies and repatriation.

Application process

Tips for China travelers

  • Apply well in advance: The earliest you can apply is generally up to 6 months before travel; during peak seasons, apply as early as possible but not earlier than 6 months before travel.
  • Common rejection reasons for Chinese applicants: insufficient funds or inconsistent proof of funds; incomplete or missing documents; travel health insurance not meeting requirements or not valid for the entire Schengen period; lack of accommodation or return tickets; lack of ties to home country or unclear travel purpose; missing biometrics or mismatched information; invalid passport or missing pages.
  • VACs vs direct embassy: You will typically submit your application through the designated Swedish visa application centre in China or directly at the Swedish embassy/consulate, depending on current arrangements; book appointments early to secure a slot.
  • Travel advisories and bilateral notes: Always check the latest travel advisories from Sweden (government.se) and from your own government for China; visa rules and fees can change, as can processing times.
  • Extension options inside Sweden: Short-stay Schengen visas cannot be extended from within Sweden in most cases; if you intend to stay longer, apply for a national residence permit (studies, work, or family reunification) from outside Sweden, or switch to a national permit if eligible while outside the Schengen area.
