Chinese citizens can obtain a Rwandan visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport, or apply in advance online through the Irembo portal; the standard 30-day single-entry visa costs $50 and is typically issued within minutes on arrival.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry
  • No advance visa is strictly required, but pre-applying online through Irembo (Rwanda's government services portal) is recommended to speed up airport processing
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from or having transited a yellow-fever-endemic country
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, not mandatory
  • Biometrics: fingerprint and photo capture at the immigration desk on arrival

Visa types

  • Single-entry Tourist/Visitor Visa - issued on arrival or via Irembo in advance, valid for a stay of 30 days, fee $50
  • East Africa Tourist Visa - multiple entry across Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda, valid 90 days, fee $100, must be applied for before arriving in the first of the three countries
  • Business Visa - similar process to the standard visitor visa, supported by an invitation letter from the Rwandan host company

Visa on arrival

  • Port of entry: Kigali International Airport (visa on arrival is also available at major land border posts)
  • Step 1: If not pre-approved via Irembo, complete the arrival visa form at the immigration counter
  • Step 2: Present passport, accommodation proof, and return ticket
  • Step 3: Pay the $50 fee by card or USD cash at the counter
  • Step 4: Biometrics are captured and the 30-day visa is issued immediately
  • Queue tips: travelers who pre-apply via Irembo and receive approval before departure move through a separate, faster lane

  • Single-entry visa: $50, payable on arrival or in advance via Irembo
  • East Africa Tourist Visa: $100, must be arranged before the trip begins
  • No separate service fee for on-arrival processing
  • Processing time: immediate on arrival; Irembo pre-approval typically takes 1-3 business days
  • No express option is needed for on-arrival issuance since it is already immediate

Tips for China travelers

  • Pre-applying via Irembo before departure is the single best way to avoid airport queues, even though on-arrival issuance is reliable
  • Carry proof of yellow fever vaccination if your itinerary includes any stopover in an endemic country, as this is checked more strictly than the visa itself
  • If your trip includes Kenya or Uganda, the East Africa Tourist Visa is more cost-effective than three separate single-entry visas
  • Rwanda's visa fee and process are the same regardless of nationality, so no special Chinese-specific document is required beyond the standard list
  • Extensions beyond 30 days can be requested through the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration before the visa expires
