Portugal Visa for China Citizens 2026

Chinese citizens need a Schengen (Type C) visa to enter Portugal, applied for through VFS Global visa application centers in China; the visa costs EUR 80, with standard processing of about 15 calendar days.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • Completed and signed Schengen visa application form
  • Two recent biometric passport photos, 35x35mm, white background
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 across the Schengen area for the full trip
  • Proof of accommodation for the full stay (hotel bookings or a host's invitation letter)
  • Round-trip flight reservation
  • Bank statements for the last 3-6 months
  • Employment letter or business license, plus approved leave if employed
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo captured at the VFS Global center

Visa types

  • Schengen Visa Type C, single entry - valid for the planned trip, up to 90 days, fee EUR 80
  • Schengen Visa Type C, multiple entry - for applicants with a positive Schengen travel history, can be issued for 1-5 years, same EUR 80 fee
  • National (Type D) visa - for stays over 90 days, such as the Portugal D7 or work visas, requiring separate, more extensive documentation

How to apply

  • Step 1: Book an appointment at the VFS Global Portugal visa application center in China
  • Step 2: Complete the online application form and print it with the appointment confirmation
  • Step 3: Attend the appointment with passport, photos, insurance, accommodation and flight proof, and financial documents; biometrics are captured
  • Step 4: Pay the EUR 80 visa fee plus the VFS service fee (approximately RMB 150-200)
  • Step 5: Track the application status online and collect the passport with the visa sticker, or arrange courier return
  • Interview: not standard, though clarifying questions are possible

Tips for China travelers

  • Apply 3-4 weeks before travel, and no earlier than 6 months ahead
  • If Portugal is where you'll spend the most nights on a multi-country Schengen trip, apply at the Portuguese VFS center rather than another Schengen country's
  • Chinese applicants are commonly asked for clearer proof of the purpose of travel and sufficient funds - keep documentation specific and consistent
  • Ensure travel insurance explicitly names Schengen-area coverage of at least EUR 30,000
  • Extensions inside Portugal are only granted for exceptional reasons through SEF/AIMA; routine tourist stays cannot be extended beyond 90 days within a 180-day window
