What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
  • Completed arrival visa application form (available at the counter or online in advance via the Department of Immigration website)
  • One recent passport-size photo (if not using the digital kiosk, which captures your photo automatically)
  • Visa fee in USD cash or major convertible currency (card payment is available at some counters)
  • Proof of onward/return travel is sometimes requested but not strictly mandatory
  • No biometrics beyond a photo are required; travel health insurance is recommended given high-altitude trekking risks

Visa types

  • Tourist Visa on Arrival: multiple entry, available in three durations — 15 days (USD 30), 30 days (USD 50), and 90 days (USD 125)
  • Business Visa: requires a prior invitation/recommendation letter from a Nepali company, applied for in advance at the nearest Nepali embassy rather than on arrival
  • Trekking/Expedition permits for restricted areas (e.g., Upper Mustang, Manaslu) are separate permits obtained in Kathmandu after visa issuance, not part of the visa itself

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) and major land border crossings including Kodari/Rasuwagadhi (Tibet-Nepal border)
  • Steps: use the self-service kiosk to enter details and take your photo, print the receipt, proceed to the visa fee payment counter, then present the receipt and payment at the immigration counter for stamping
  • Fees are payable in USD cash, other major convertible currencies, or by card at select counters; Nepali rupees are generally not accepted for the visa fee
  • Queue times at Kathmandu airport can range from 15 minutes to over an hour depending on flight arrival volume

  • No VFS/BLS service fee, as the visa is issued directly by Nepali immigration at the port of entry

  • Extensions within Nepal can be obtained at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu, costing roughly USD 3 per day plus a late fee if applicable

Tips for China travelers

  • Pre-fill the online arrival form (available on the Department of Immigration website) before your flight to speed up the kiosk step at the airport
  • Carry USD cash in small denominations, since change is not always readily available at the payment counter
  • If crossing by land from Tibet via Kodari or Rasuwagadhi, confirm the border's current operating hours and visa-on-arrival availability, as some crossings have had intermittent closures
  • Budget extra time for immigration at Kathmandu airport during peak trekking season (October-November and March-April)
  • If your trip includes a restricted trekking area, arrange the required special permit through a registered trekking agency in Kathmandu after your visa is stamped
