Malta Visa for China Citizens 2026

Chinese citizens need a Schengen (Type C) visa to visit Malta, applied for through the Malta visa application centre or an authorized partner such as VFS Global in China, with fees set at the standard Schengen rate.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, with 2 blank pages
  • Completed and signed Schengen visa application form
  • Two recent biometric passport photos (35x45mm)
  • Round-trip flight reservation
  • Proof of accommodation for the whole stay (hotel bookings or invitation letter)
  • Travel health insurance covering the Schengen area with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage
  • Proof of financial means (bank statements for the last 3-6 months, or sponsorship letter)
  • Proof of employment/business registration and approved leave letter
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo captured in person at the visa application centre

Visa types

  • Schengen Tourist Visa (Type C): single, double, or multiple entry, valid up to 90 days within any 180-day period
  • Schengen Business Visa (Type C): for business meetings/conferences, requires invitation letter from a Maltese company
  • National Visa (Type D): for study, work, or long-term stay, applied for separately through Identity Malta
  • Airport Transit Visa (Type A): rarely required for Chinese passport holders transiting through Malta's airport without leaving the transit area

  • Book an appointment at the Malta visa application centre or VFS Global office handling Malta visas in China
  • Submit the complete document set and biometrics in person
  • Pay the visa fee at the application centre
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days, extendable up to 30-60 days in complex cases
  • Visa decision and passport return via the centre or courier service

  • Schengen visa fee: EUR 90 (adults), paid in local currency equivalent
  • VFS Global service fee: approximately USD 25-35 in addition to the visa fee
  • Total estimated cost: around USD 120-140
  • Standard processing: 15 working days from a complete application
  • No dedicated express service for Schengen visas; applying well ahead is recommended instead

Tips for China travelers

  • Apply at least 4-6 weeks before travel to allow for appointment scheduling and the 15-day processing window
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient financial proof, unclear travel purpose, weak ties showing intent to overstay, inconsistent itinerary
  • Apply at the Schengen state that is the main destination or where you'll spend the most nights — Malta if it is the primary stop
  • Multiple-entry visas are more likely for applicants with a history of prior Schengen travel and a clean visa record
