Chinese citizens receive a free 30-day visa on arrival in the Maldives automatically on entry, provided they hold a valid passport, a confirmed accommodation booking, and proof of sufficient funds.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of stay (at least 6 months recommended)
  • Confirmed hotel, resort, or guesthouse booking (or sponsor letter for local island/liveaboard stays)
  • Proof of sufficient funds, roughly USD 100 plus USD 50/day, or a pre-paid booking covering the stay
  • Return or onward ticket
  • No passport photo or application form required
  • Biometrics: not required
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory but recommended given limited medical facilities on outer islands

Visa types

  • Free 30-day Visitor Visa (on arrival): granted automatically to virtually all nationalities including China, no application, no fee
  • Visitor Visa extension: can extend up to a combined 90 days by applying at the Department of Immigration in Male before expiry, fee applies
  • Business Visa / Resident Permit: separate application required for work or long-term residence, sponsored by a local entity

Entry conditions

  • 30 days granted free on arrival at Velana International Airport or other entry points
  • Travelers must show a confirmed accommodation booking or local sponsor
  • Employment or local business activity not permitted under the visitor visa
  • Extension up to a combined 90 days possible via application and fee payment in Male

  • Extension fee: approximately USD 100-120 for up to 90 days total, processed same day to a few working days at the Department of Immigration, Male
  • No visa service/agency fee required since there is no pre-arrival application

Tips for China travelers

  • Book accommodation before departure since immigration may ask for proof of a confirmed resort/guesthouse reservation
  • Carry a printed or digital copy of the booking confirmation and return ticket
  • If visiting local islands (not resorts), check Shariah-based restrictions on alcohol and dress code
  • For extensions, apply at least a few days before the 30-day period ends to avoid overstay penalties
  • Confirm the latest entry requirements with the Maldives Immigration (immigration.gov.mv) given periodic policy updates
