Visa on Arrival

Chinese citizens can enter Madagascar with a visa on arrival (or pre-arranged eVisa) at major airports, for a fee tiered by stay length, up to 90 days.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay
  • Completed arrival visa form (available on the plane, at the airport, or pre-filled online via evisamada.gov.mg)
  • One passport photo if applying on paper on arrival
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking) recommended, though not always strictly checked
  • Proof of funds not formally required but good practice to carry (cash/card)
  • Travel health insurance recommended; yellow fever vaccination only required if arriving from an at-risk country

Visa types

  • Visa on arrival / eVisa (Tourist) — single entry, fee tiered by length of stay: up to 30 days, 31-60 days, or 61-90 days
  • Business visa — same on-arrival/eVisa system but requires an invitation letter from a Madagascar-based company
  • Long-stay visa (over 90 days) — must be arranged in advance through the Madagascar embassy, not available on arrival

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Ivato International Airport (Antananarivo) and other designated entry points
  • Travelers can pre-apply online via the eVisa Madagascar portal (evisamada.gov.mg) to get an approval reference and speed up the airport process, or complete the form on arrival
  • Fee is tiered: approximately EUR 10 for up to 30 days, EUR 20 for 31-60 days, and EUR 30 for 61-90 days (local Ariary equivalent and USD also widely accepted)
  • Present the passport, completed form, photo (if not using the eVisa option) and the fee at the visa counter before immigration
  • Processing at the airport counter is usually quick, 10-20 minutes outside of peak arrival times

Fees & processing time

  • On-arrival/eVisa fee: EUR 10/20/30 depending on stay length (up to 30 / 31-60 / 61-90 days)
  • No separate VFS/BLS service fee; the eVisa portal charges only the standard government fee plus a small online processing surcharge
  • Standard processing: immediate at the airport counter, or 24-72 hours if using the eVisa pre-approval online
  • No express option needed given the already fast turnaround

Tips for China travelers

  • Use the eVisa pre-approval online before the flight to shorten the queue at Ivato Airport, which can get congested during peak season (June-September)
  • Carry euros or USD in small denominations for the visa fee; card payment is not reliably available at the arrival visa counter
  • Choose the correct fee tier matching your exact planned stay length to avoid paying for extensions later
  • Extensions beyond the original visa period can be requested at the immigration office in Antananarivo before expiry, for a fee proportional to the extra days
  • Domestic flights within Madagascar can be heavily booked; arrange onward domestic travel in advance if visiting beyond the capital
