Mainland Chinese citizens don't need a conventional visa for Macao; instead they need a Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao with a valid Individual Visit endorsement, obtained from their local Exit-Entry Administration office in China.

What you need

  • A valid Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao, a separate travel document from the ordinary PRC passport
  • A valid Individual Visit endorsement (G endorsement) or Group Tour endorsement (L endorsement), issued on the travel permit for the traveler's registered city of residence
  • Original ID card for application at the local Exit-Entry Administration Bureau
  • Recent digital ID photo taken at the application counter (standard PRC ID photo specs)
  • No invitation letter needed for individual tourism; group tours require registration through a licensed travel agency
  • No proof of funds or return ticket typically checked, since this is an internal administrative travel document rather than a foreign visa

Visa types

  • Individual Visit endorsement (G) — available to residents of most mainland cities, allows individual non-group travel to Macao, typically valid for multiple entries over 1-5 years depending on local policy, each stay up to 7 days
  • Group Tour endorsement (L) — for travelers joining an organized tour group through a licensed agency, tied to specific tour dates
  • Business/other-purpose endorsements — for residents whose work requires more frequent travel, subject to local Exit-Entry Administration rules and employer documentation

How to apply

  • Apply in person at the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau in your city/county of household registration or current residence permit location
  • Submit the application form, ID card, and have a photo taken at the counter; first-time applicants need to apply for the travel permit itself before adding an endorsement
  • Processing is handled entirely within mainland China's public security system; there is no Macao embassy or consulate involved, since Macao is a Special Administrative Region of China
  • Present the Mainland Travel Permit with a valid, unused endorsement at the border checkpoint when crossing into Macao (e.g. the Gongbei/Macao border or the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge)

Fees & processing time

  • Mainland Travel Permit (first issuance or renewal): approximately RMB 100 per permit, valid for 10 years for adults
  • Individual Visit / Group Tour endorsement fee: approximately RMB 20 per endorsement
  • Standard processing time: around 10 working days at most Exit-Entry Administration offices; many cities now offer same-day or next-day service for straightforward renewals
  • Expedited processing: available at some bureaus for urgent travel, for an additional fee where locally offered

Tips for China travelers

  • Check endorsement eligibility for your specific city; Individual Visit endorsement coverage has expanded significantly over the years but still varies by location
  • Each individual-visit entry is generally capped at a 7-day stay; plan trip length accordingly or arrange a new endorsement for a longer visit
  • Many mainland cities now support online appointment booking and mobile-app renewal of endorsements, which is faster than a walk-in visit
  • Keep the Mainland Travel Permit separate from your PRC passport and bring it specifically for Macao/Hong Kong trips
  • If the permit is close to its 10-year expiry, renew it before applying for a new endorsement, since an endorsement cannot be added to an expired permit
