Chinese citizens need a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) for Luxembourg — apply at the Luxembourg Embassy in China with standard processing about 15 days (up to 30 days); visa fee 80 EUR; stay up to 90 days in 180 days.

What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, and have at least two blank pages.
  • Specific forms: Schengen visa application form completed for Luxembourg and submitted as part of your appointment package. If available, follow the embassy's instructions for the official form.
  • Financial proof: Bank statements for the last 3 months showing funds to cover travel and stay. There is no published fixed minimum amount by Luxembourg; you must demonstrate sufficient funds. Sponsorship letters, pay slips, or tax returns can help.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Confirmed hotel bookings or an invitation letter from a host in Luxembourg, plus a round-trip flight reservation or itinerary.
  • Photo spec: Two recent passport photos (35x45 mm) with a plain light background, full face visible, not older than 6 months; no hats or sunglasses unless medically required.
  • Biometrics: Yes. You will need to appear in person to give biometric data at the visa application center or embassy during your appointment.
  • Travel health insurance: Travel medical insurance is mandatory for Schengen visas. It must cover at least 30,000 EUR for medical emergencies, be valid for all Schengen states, and cover the dates of your stay in Luxembourg.

  • Long-stay visa (Type D) – Work. Official name: Luxembourg national visa (Type D) for work. Validity: up to 12 months initially (renewable). Entry: multiple. Approximate fee: 80 EUR.
  • Long-stay visa (Type D) – Family reunification. Official name: Luxembourg national visa (Type D) for family reunification. Validity: up to 12 months initially (renewable). Entry: multiple. Approximate fee: 80 EUR.

Application process

  • How to apply: Sticker visa. Applications are processed by the Luxembourg embassy or consulate in China (Beijing and/or other consulates as designated). In some cases, a national visa center (VFS Global or TLScontact) may handle submissions on behalf of Luxembourg; check the official Luxembourg government page for the current center in your area.
  • How to apply online (where applicable): There is no widely available fully online e-visa for Luxembourg; you generally apply in person at the embassy or through the designated visa center.
  • Steps to apply: 1) Book an appointment at the embassy or visa center. 2) Compile and submit all required documents. 3) Provide biometrics at your appointment. 4) Pay the visa fee and any center service charges. 5) Attend an interview if requested. 6) Wait for the decision (see processing times). 7) Collect your passport with the visa if approved.
  • Documents checklist: Valid passport; Schengen visa application form; 2 photos; travel medical insurance; round-trip flight reservation; proof of accommodation; bank statements or other proof of funds; employer letter or university admission letter for long-stay; host invitation letter if staying with a private host; any additional documents requested by the embassy.
  • Fees & payment: Consular fee 80 EUR for adults; 40 EUR for children 6-11; free for children under 6. Payment methods vary by center; some accept cash in euros, others accept cards. Some visa centers charge an additional service fee.

  • Visa fee: 80 EUR for adults; 40 EUR for children aged 6-11; free for children under 6.
  • Visa center/service fees: If you use a designated visa center, there may be an additional service fee typically around 25-30 EUR.
  • Total cost estimate: Approximately 105-110 EUR for an adult when including a service center fee (plus any courier or delivery charges if you choose). For children, fees are proportionally lower (40 EUR base plus potential service fee).
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days from the date of your appointment; it may take up to 30 days in some cases; in exceptional circumstances, processing can extend to 60 days.
  • Express/priority option: Some centers offer expedited processing for an extra fee; availability and cost depend on the center and location; check with the embassy or visa center.

Tips for China travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: Apply at least 15 days before travel; 3-4 weeks ahead is recommended, especially during peak travel seasons.
  • Common rejection reasons for Chinese applicants: Incomplete or inconsistent documents; insufficient evidence of funds; lack of travel medical insurance or insurance not valid for the whole stay; unclear purpose of travel or mismatched documents (for example, invitation letter not aligned with travel plans); passport validity or photo issues; not applying to the correct visa category.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: If a visa center handles submissions, ensure you follow their document checklist and appointment process; if applying directly at the embassy, bring originals and copies; verify current procedures on the official embassy page.
  • Travel advisories and bilateral notes: Check the Luxembourg government and the Chinese embassy for the latest travel advisories, entry rules, and current visa requirements before you travel.
  • Extension options inside Luxembourg: Short-stay (Type C) visas cannot be extended beyond 90 days in 180 days. To stay longer, you must apply for a long-stay visa (Type D) from Luxembourg or your country of residence before your current visa expires, and/or apply for the relevant residence permit after arrival according to Luxembourg law.
