What you need

  • Passport valid at least 3 months beyond the planned departure date with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed and signed Schengen visa application form
  • Two recent biometric photos (35x45mm, white background)
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 for the entire Schengen area
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or formal invitation/Verpflichtungserklarung from a German host)
  • Round-trip flight itinerary/reservation
  • Financial proof: 3-6 months of bank statements, or a sponsor's financial guarantee, generally expecting at least EUR 45-65/day equivalent
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and digital photo) captured at the visa application center

Visa types

  • Schengen Tourist/Business visa (Type C): single or multiple entry, up to 90 days within 180 days, fee EUR 90
  • Family visit visa: same validity, requires Verpflichtungserklarung (formal obligation letter) from the German host
  • Student visa (National Type D): for university enrollment over 90 days, fee EUR 75, requires university admission and blocked account (Sperrkonto) proof of about EUR 11,904/year
  • Work visa: requires a job contract and, in most cases, approval from the German employment agency

How to apply

  • Book an appointment through the German visa application center (operated via VFS Global, or the consulate's own booking system) covering Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or Chengdu
  • Complete the application form online and print it, then submit it in person with all supporting documents
  • Provide biometrics at the appointment
  • Pay the visa fee (EUR 90) plus the VAC service fee (approximately CNY 150-200)
  • Processing standard time is 15 calendar days, though it can extend to several weeks during busy seasons

  • A Verpflichtungserklarung must be obtained by the German host from their local immigration office (Ausländerbehörde) before the visa application
  • Frequent travelers with a clean Schengen history can be granted multi-year multiple-entry visas
  • Students should start the Sperrkonto and university admission process several months ahead, as this is often the slowest step
