Chinese citizens need an online e-visa to visit Bhutan, arranged through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator; the visa itself is free but a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of US$100 per day applies.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay
  • Confirmed travel itinerary/booking through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator (independent travel is not permitted for most visitors)
  • One recent passport-size digital photo
  • Proof of payment of the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) and any tour costs
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Biometrics: not required online; a photo is captured on arrival
  • Travel/medical insurance is recommended, and some tour packages include it

Visa types

  • Tourist e-Visa - arranged via a licensed tour operator, valid for the approved trip duration, visa fee is free of charge (SDF charged separately)
  • Business Visa - for approved business visits, requires sponsorship documentation from a Bhutanese entity
  • Diplomatic/Official Visa - for government delegations, arranged through official channels

How to apply online

  • Book your trip through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator, who submits the e-visa application via the online Bhutan visa portal on your behalf
  • Pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF, US$100 per person per night) and any tour package costs in advance
  • The e-visa is typically approved within 3-5 business days once the operator submits the application
  • The approved e-visa is emailed as a printable document; present it along with your passport on arrival
  • Entry is at Paro International Airport or the Phuentsholing land border
