Guide last updated September 28, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, with 2 blank pages
  • Completed and signed Schengen visa application form
  • Proof of sufficient funds, typically bank statements for the last 3 months showing at least EUR 65-100 per day of stay
  • Confirmed round-trip flight reservation and detailed day-by-day itinerary
  • Proof of accommodation for the entire stay (hotel bookings or invitation letter)
  • Two recent passport photos, 35mm x 45mm, light background, per ICAO standards
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo captured at the VFS Global visa application centre
  • Travel health insurance: mandatory, minimum EUR 30,000 coverage valid across the Schengen area

Visa types

  • Schengen Type C Tourist Visa: single or multiple entry, valid up to 90 days within a 180-day period, fee EUR 90
  • Schengen Type C Business Visa: single or multiple entry, same validity rules, fee EUR 90, requires a business invitation letter
  • National Type D Visa: for study, work, or long-stay purposes, validity and fee vary by purpose, arranged separately with the consulate

How to apply

  • Applications are lodged through VFS Global on behalf of the Spanish Consulate, or directly at the Spanish diplomatic mission where no VFS centre exists
  • Steps: book an appointment online, complete the application form, gather the document checklist, attend the appointment to submit biometrics and documents, pay the fee
  • Fee: EUR 90 Schengen visa fee plus a VFS service fee of approx EUR 25-30
  • Standard processing time: 10-15 working days; can extend to 30 days during peak season
  • An in-person appointment is required; no waiver for first-time applicants

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: EUR 90 (approx USD 95-100), non-refundable even if the application is refused
  • VFS Global service fee: approx EUR 25-30
  • Total cost estimate: EUR 115-120
  • Standard processing time: 10-15 working days from the appointment date
  • Express/priority option: some VFS centres offer premium lounge or prime-time services for an extra fee, but this does not shorten the consulate's own processing time

Tips for Zambia travelers

  • Apply at least 4-6 weeks before your planned travel date given limited appointment slots and processing time
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient proof of funds, unclear travel purpose, weak ties to Zambia, incomplete insurance coverage
  • Book your VFS appointment as early as possible, as slots fill up quickly in Lusaka-adjacent visa centres
  • Keep copies of all submitted documents and the appointment confirmation
  • Extensions inside Spain are rarely granted for tourist visas; plan your itinerary to fit within the approved dates
