Rwanda Visa for Zambia Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Zambian citizens can enter Rwanda visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism or business under Rwanda's open-border policy for all African Union nationals — no visa application is needed, just a valid passport and yellow fever certificate.

Guide last updated September 28, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid at least 6 months beyond arrival
  • No visa application form needed for stays up to 30 days
  • Proof of onward/return ticket
  • Proof of accommodation or invitation letter
  • Proof of sufficient funds (immigration officers use a ~US$50/day guideline)
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory — Zambia is a WHO-listed endemic country
  • No biometrics required beyond the standard photo/fingerprint capture at the border e-gate
  • Travel health insurance recommended, not mandatory

Visa types

  • No visa category applies for tourist or business stays up to 30 days
  • Extended Stay Permit: extends the visit up to 90 days total, applied for at the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE) in Kigali, fee approx. US$20
  • Work Permit (Class C-G depending on job type): for paid employment, fee from US$300/year, employer-sponsored
  • Student Permit: required for study visits longer than 30 days

Entry conditions

  • 30 days granted per entry under the AU visa-free arrangement; each new entry resets the 30-day clock
  • No employment permitted on visitor entry
  • Present passport, yellow fever certificate and return ticket at the port of entry
  • Extension to 90 days available in-country at DGIE offices in Kacyiru, Kigali, for about US$20

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: US$0 (visa-free entry)
  • Extension fee: approx. RWF 20,000 (about US$15), processed same day to 3 business days at DGIE Kigali
  • No VFS/service fee since no visa application is filed
  • Total cost for a standard tourist entry: US$0

Tips for Zambia travelers

  • Carry your yellow fever vaccination certificate — this is the most common reason Zambian travelers are stopped at the border
  • Book a confirmed onward/return ticket before travel, since airlines can check for it
  • Apply for an extension at DGIE Kigali before day 30 rather than risk overstay fines (about US$50/day)
  • Zambia has no resident High Commission in Kigali; the nearest missions are in Nairobi or Dar es Salaam, so carry alternate emergency contacts
