Guide last updated September 27, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed and signed visa application form
  • Proof of sufficient funds — recent 3 months' bank statements
  • Confirmed round-trip flight reservation
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter from a Romanian host)
  • Biometric passport photo, 35x45mm, plain background, taken within the last 6 months
  • Biometrics captured in person at the visa application centre
  • Travel medical insurance, minimum EUR 30,000 coverage, valid for the whole Schengen area

Visa types

  • Short-stay Type C visa — single or multiple entry, valid for stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period, fee about EUR 90
  • Since Romania joined the Schengen area (air and sea borders from March 2024, land borders from January 2025), a Type C visa issued by Romania — or a valid Schengen visa from another Schengen state — is generally accepted for entry
  • Business visa — for meetings and conferences, requiring an invitation letter
  • National long-stay visas (Type D) for study or work exceed 90 days and are handled separately by Romanian consular services

How to apply

  • Book an appointment through VFS Global's Romania visa application centre or the Romanian embassy/consulate covering Zambia
  • Complete the online application form and print the confirmation
  • Attend in person to submit documents and give biometrics
  • Pay the visa fee in local currency equivalent
  • Track the application status online using the reference number
  • Collect the passport with the decision, or arrange courier return

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: EUR 90 (about USD 97) for adults; reduced fee EUR 45 for children aged 6–11
  • VFS Global service fee: an additional USD 25–35 typically applies
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days from a complete application
  • Can extend to 30–45 days if additional documentation or checks are required

Tips for Zambia travelers

  • Apply at least 3–4 weeks ahead of travel, and no more than 6 months in advance
  • Common rejection reasons: weak financial documentation, unclear travel purpose, or insufficient return-ties evidence
  • Include a cover letter outlining your itinerary and purpose of travel
  • If also visiting other Schengen states, apply at the embassy/VFS of the country where you will spend the most nights
  • Extensions inside Romania are only granted in exceptional circumstances — plan your dates conservatively
