Guide last updated September 27, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed Schengen visa application form (signed)
  • Proof of sufficient funds — recent 3 months' bank statements showing at least NOK 500 (about USD 45) per day of stay
  • Confirmed round-trip flight reservation
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter from a Norwegian host)
  • Biometric passport photo, 35x45mm, plain white/light grey background, taken within the last 6 months
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) captured in person at the visa application centre — required unless fingerprints were taken for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months
  • Travel medical insurance valid across the Schengen area, minimum EUR 30,000 coverage, covering the full trip

Visa types

  • Schengen Tourist/Visit visa (Type C) — single or multiple entry, valid for stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period, fee about EUR 90
  • Business visa — for meetings, conferences, trade fairs; same Type C category with an invitation/business letter
  • Family visit visa — requires an invitation from the host in Norway plus proof of relationship
  • Study visa (over 90 days) is a national long-stay visa (Type D), handled separately from the Schengen application and applied for directly through the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI)

How to apply

  • Book an appointment through VFS Global's Norway visa application centre serving your region (applicants from Zambia typically route through the nearest VFS/Norwegian mission covering Southern Africa)
  • Complete the online Schengen application form and print the confirmation page
  • Attend the appointment in person to submit documents and biometrics
  • Pay the visa fee in local currency equivalent at the application centre
  • Track the application status online using the reference number provided
  • Decisions are sent by SMS/email, and passports are returned via the centre or courier

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: EUR 90 (about USD 97) for adults; EUR 45 for children aged 6–11; free under 6
  • VFS Global service fee: typically an additional USD 25–35 on top of the visa fee
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days from a complete application
  • Can extend to 30–45 days if additional documentation or consultation with other Schengen states is required
  • No same-day or express Schengen option — apply well ahead of travel dates

Tips for Zambia travelers

  • Apply at least 3–4 weeks before your intended travel date, and not more than 6 months in advance
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient bank balance history, unclear travel purpose, missing or unconvincing return-ties documentation (employment letter, property, family)
  • Include a cover letter explaining the purpose and itinerary of the trip
  • If you plan to visit multiple Schengen countries, apply at the embassy/VFS of the country where you'll spend the most nights, or your first port of entry if time is split equally
  • Extensions inside Norway are only granted in exceptional circumstances (medical emergency, force majeure) — plan your dates conservatively
