Japan Visa for Zambia Citizens 2026

Visa Required

Zambian citizens need a visa to enter Japan, applied for in advance at the Japanese embassy or an accredited visa application centre.

Guide last updated September 27, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of the intended stay, with at least one blank page
  • Completed Japanese visa application form with a recent passport photo (45x45mm, white background) attached
  • Proof of employment or business registration in Zambia
  • Bank statements for the last 3-6 months showing sufficient funds
  • Detailed travel itinerary and proof of accommodation for the entire stay
  • Round-trip flight reservation
  • Invitation letter from a host in Japan, if visiting family, friends, or a business partner (a Certificate of Eligibility further speeds processing for longer stays)
  • Biometrics are not required for most short-term visa applications but may be requested for certain categories

Visa types

  • Temporary visitor visa (tourism/business): single entry, valid for a stay of up to 90 days, fee approximately JPY 3,000 (about USD 20) for single entry or JPY 6,000 (about USD 40) for double/multiple entry
  • Business visa: for meetings, negotiations, and short-term assignments, similar fee structure to the tourist visa but requires an invitation from the Japanese host company
  • Working visa and student visa: require a Certificate of Eligibility issued in Japan by a sponsor before applying at the embassy, processed separately from the standard tourist visa

How to apply

  • Submit the application in person or through an accredited travel agency at the Japanese embassy/consulate covering Zambia, or the designated visa application centre
  • Prepare all required documents, including the completed form, photo, financial proof, and itinerary
  • Pay the visa fee at the time of submission or collection, as instructed by the embassy
  • Processing does not usually require an interview for straightforward tourist applications
  • Collect the passport with the visa sticker in person or via the agency once the decision is made

Fees & processing time

  • Single-entry visa fee: approximately JPY 3,000 (about USD 20)
  • Double/multiple-entry visa fee: approximately JPY 6,000 (about USD 40)
  • Visa agency/handling fee, if using an accredited agent: typically an additional USD 20-40
  • Total estimated cost: USD 20-80 depending on visa type and whether an agent is used
  • Standard processing time: 5-7 working days from submission, though this can extend if additional documents are requested

Tips for Zambia travelers

  • Apply at least 3-4 weeks before your travel date to allow time for document preparation and possible requests for additional information
  • A common rejection reason is an unclear or unrealistic travel itinerary, or insufficient proof of funds relative to the length of stay - be specific and thorough
  • If visiting for business, ensure your invitation letter from the Japanese host company includes full details of the visit's purpose and duration
  • Confirm current jurisdiction and any accredited agency requirements, since Zambia's applications are often routed through a regional Japanese embassy
  • Keep copies of all submitted documents, as these are useful if you need to reapply or provide further clarification
