Guide last updated September 27, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the length of stay

  • No biometrics collected at the border for visa-free visitors

Visa types

  • No visa needed for tourism or business visits up to 90 days
  • Employment visa: required for anyone taking up paid work, applied for in advance through the Hong Kong Immigration Department and sponsored by an employer
  • Student visa: required for courses longer than the visa-free period, also applied for through the Immigration Department
  • Dependant visa: for family members of Hong Kong visa holders or residents

Entry conditions

  • Zambian citizens may stay visa-free for up to 90 days per visit for tourism or business, including meetings, trade fairs, or contract negotiations
  • Paid employment is not permitted without a separate employment visa
  • On arrival, immigration officers may ask for proof of onward travel and sufficient funds
  • Extensions of stay beyond 90 days are granted only in exceptional circumstances by the Immigration Department and are not routine

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for visa-free entry
  • No processing time - immigration clearance happens on arrival, typically within minutes via e-channels or manned counters
  • Employment or student visa government fees are around HKD 190 (about USD 24) plus employer/sponsor documentation costs
  • Employment/student visa processing typically takes 4-6 weeks

Tips for Zambia travelers

  • Carry proof of your return flight and accommodation, as immigration officers occasionally ask to see these even for visa-free entrants
  • Hong Kong is a common transit hub from Africa to East Asia and Australia - if only transiting, check whether the 7-day transit exemption applies instead of using your 90-day allowance
  • Visa-free entry to Hong Kong does not grant entry to mainland China, which has separate visa requirements
  • Register your travel dates with the Zambian mission covering Hong Kong (usually the Zambian Embassy in Beijing) for any needed consular support
  • If you plan to work or study, start the employment/student visa process well in advance, as it cannot be converted from visitor status inside Hong Kong
