Visa Required

Zambian citizens need a Schengen visa to visit Germany; apply through the German visa application centre (VFS Global) in Lusaka, pay a EUR 90 fee, and allow up to 15 calendar days for processing.

Guide last updated September 27, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid at least 3 months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen area, with 2 blank pages
  • Completed national visa application form
  • 2 biometric passport photos
  • Travel insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 for medical emergencies and repatriation
  • Confirmed round-trip flight reservation
  • Proof of accommodation for the whole stay
  • Bank statements covering the last 3 months showing sufficient funds
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) taken at the visa application centre

Visa types

  • Schengen Tourist/Visitor visa (Type C): single or multiple entry, up to 90 days within 180 days, fee EUR 90
  • Business visa: same category, requires an invitation letter from the German host company
  • National (Type D) visa: for study, work, or family reunification, requiring a separate longer application process with the German mission

How to apply

  • Book an appointment at the VFS Global centre in Lusaka handling Germany's visa applications
  • Complete the application form and gather the document checklist
  • Attend the appointment to submit documents and give biometrics
  • Pay the fee
  • Track the decision online; the passport is returned via the centre once the local mission decides

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: EUR 90
  • VFS service fee: approximately EUR 25-30
  • Total: roughly EUR 115-120
  • Standard processing: up to 15 calendar days from a complete application
  • Can take 30-45 days during peak periods or for further checks

Tips for Zambia travelers

  • Book your appointment 4-6 weeks ahead since slots in Lusaka can be limited
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient proof of funds, unclear ties to Zambia (risk of overstay), incomplete or inconsistent travel insurance
  • If your trip involves several Schengen countries, apply through Germany only if it is your main destination or first point of entry
  • Extensions within Germany are rare, granted only by the local Auslanderbehorde (foreigners' office) for exceptional circumstances
