Guide last updated September 27, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid at least 3 months beyond departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, with 2 blank pages
  • Completed Schengen visa application form
  • 2 recent biometric passport photos (35x45mm, white background)
  • Travel insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 medical/repatriation for the whole Schengen stay
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Round-trip flight reservation
  • Bank statements for the last 3 months showing sufficient funds (roughly EUR 30-50/day)
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) captured in person at the VFS Global visa application centre, required every 5 years or on first Schengen application

Visa types

  • Schengen Tourist/Visitor visa (Type C): single or multiple entry, valid up to 90 days within a 180-day period, fee EUR 90
  • Business visa: same category, needs invitation letter from the Finnish host company, fee EUR 90
  • Student/long-stay national visa (Type D): requires a separate application through the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) with a residence permit, not covered by the standard Schengen fee

How to apply

  • Book an appointment with VFS Global Lusaka, the outsourced application centre handling Finland's visas for Zambia
  • Complete the online form via migri.fi
  • Gather the document checklist above
  • Attend the appointment to submit documents and biometrics
  • Pay the fee
  • Track the decision online; approved visas are collected in person or via courier

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: EUR 90
  • VFS service fee: approximately EUR 25-30 on top
  • Total cost: roughly EUR 115-120
  • Standard processing: up to 15 calendar days, extendable to 30-45 days in complex cases
  • No formal express service

Tips for Zambia travelers

  • Apply at least 3-4 weeks before your trip since Lusaka has limited appointment slots and documents are sent to Helsinki for review
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient proof of funds, weak ties showing intent to return to Zambia, inconsistent travel itineraries
  • VFS Global is mandatory since Finland has no resident consulate in Zambia
  • Extensions inside the Schengen area are only granted for force majeure (e.g. medical emergency) via the local police (poliisi), not for tourism convenience
