Guide last updated October 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the stay
  • Completed Costa Rican visa application, submitted via the Consulado Virtual online system
  • Two recent passport-size photos
  • Proof of economic solvency (bank statements, roughly USD 100/day of stay or a lump-sum equivalent)
  • Hotel reservation or invitation letter
  • Round-trip flight itinerary
  • Travel/health insurance covering the trip (recommended, sometimes required)
  • Biometrics: fingerprints usually taken on arrival at the port of entry

Visa types

  • Tourist (Turismo) visa: single entry, max stay 90 days, fee approx USD 55
  • Business visa: similar requirements plus an invitation letter from the host company, fee approx USD 55-65
  • Transit visa: for connections requiring airport exit, fee approx USD 25-30

How to apply

  • Register and submit the application through Costa Rica's Consulado Virtual online portal, then send physical or scanned documents to the designated consulate (commonly Pretoria, South Africa, which covers Zambia)
  • Upload the passport bio page, photos, bank statements, hotel booking and flight itinerary
  • Pay the visa fee by bank transfer or card as instructed by the consulate
  • Processing takes approximately 10-15 working days once the file is complete
  • The approved visa is issued as a passport sticker or an approval letter to present at the airport, per the consulate's instructions

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: approx USD 55 for the tourist visa
  • Courier costs for sending physical documents to the covering consulate: approx USD 30-50
  • Total estimate: USD 85-105
  • Standard processing: 10-15 working days
  • No official express track; urgent requests can be flagged to the consulate but faster handling is not guaranteed

Tips for Zambia travelers

  • Apply at least a month ahead given the distance to the covering consulate and courier time
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient funds shown, inconsistent itinerary dates, missing hotel confirmation
  • Keep digital and physical copies of all documents, since the Consulado Virtual system occasionally requires resubmission
  • Travel insurance covering medical emergencies is strongly recommended and sometimes requested at check-in
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are rarely granted, so plan exact travel dates before applying
